I am earning my Girl Scout Gold Award this year.

Ties the blankets was enjoyable, but if the results prevent FASD for one baby it will be worth every knot!My project was to raise awareness about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. FAS refers to the growth, mental, and physical problems that may occur to the fetus when a mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy. The major significance is the child’s delayed development in thinking, speech, movement, and/or social skills. The blankets are a “comfort” for the child if he or she becomes confused or frustrated.

The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome project was simple to present, because the message was clear, “women should not drink alcohol when they are pregnant”, and enjoyable to participate in making blankets.

Even the boys helped to make this happen!     The most successful part of the project was having other groups, besides Girl Scouts; ask to participate in my project. As a result I learned that I could have an impact on my community by finding a worthy cause and having a sincere desire to help.

My project goal was to donate 50 blankets. I have donated 70 blankets and will have more to donate in April. I hope that my presentation on FAS awareness will have a lasting affect on the Girl Scouts and the groups that I spoke to.
